Direct evaporative cooling (DEC) can be an excellent option for large workspaces in the UK for several reasons:
1. Energy Efficiency & Cost Savings
-
DEC uses the natural process of water evaporation to cool the air, consuming up to 80–90% less energy than traditional air conditioning.
-
For large industrial or commercial spaces, this translates into significant operating cost reductions, especially where cooling demand is seasonal rather than constant.
2. Fresh Air Supply & Improved Air Quality
-
Unlike recirculating systems, DEC continually draws in outside air, cools it through evaporation, and pushes it into the building.
-
This results in a constant supply of fresh, filtered air, helping reduce the buildup of COâ‚‚, odours, and pollutants—ideal for warehouses, workshops, and factories.
3. Suited to UK Climate
-
DEC works best in moderate and dry conditions, and the UK typically has warm but not overly humid summers.
-
Even on days with 50–60% relative humidity, DEC units can still provide a noticeable temperature drop, making workspaces far more comfortable.
4. Scalability for Large Spaces
-
Traditional refrigerant-based air conditioning becomes costly and inefficient in very large or open environments (e.g., warehouses, production halls).
-
DEC units are relatively low-cost to install and scale up, making them practical for covering big floor areas.
5. Sustainability & Green Credentials
-
With no refrigerants and minimal electricity usage, DEC systems have a low carbon footprint.
-
For UK businesses aiming to improve their ESG profile or meet sustainability targets, DEC can be a strong selling point.
6. Comfort Without Overcooling
-
Instead of creating an artificial “chill,” DEC provides natural-feeling cooling, reducing the risk of employees experiencing temperature extremes.
-
This makes it particularly suitable for environments where doors and shutters are frequently opened (e.g., logistics hubs).
✅ In short: Direct evaporative cooling is ideal for UK large workspaces because it’s energy-efficient, low-cost, provides continuous fresh air, suits the UK’s moderate climate, and aligns with sustainability goals.

How Evaporative Cooling works...
An Evaporative Cooling System changes the air in a Workspace every 1-4 minutes to allow fresh and clean air to be produced which can help the body to ventilate naturally.

It draws hot air through a wetted pad using an efficient fan, causing water to evaporate from the pads, taking the heat from the air with it resulting in cooled air being discharged into the Workspace.

An example of evaporation is the cooling you feel when stepping out of a swimming pool, the water evaporates quickly from your body, taking the heat with it.
